Central Peninsula Hospital | Thrive | Fall 2018

2 Central Peninsula Hospital Photo by Doug Boehm This past year the Central Peninsula Health Foundation set its goals on safety and training. In doing so, they raised funds to purchase a new UV robot light and high-tech advanced childbirth simulators for the Obstetrics department. With generous support from donors to the Central Peninsula Health Foundation, Central Peninsula Hospital (CPH) was able to purchase a Clorox Optimum-UV Light. Ultra Violet disinfection has now been incorpo- rated into the existing cleaning rou- tine at CPH in order to fight against health care-associated infections.  The power of light This new weapon in the fight against the spread of infection is now deployed in our operating rooms every night. The light is also being used in Emer- gency department bays following patients with highly contagious germs and viruses in order to prevent the spread to others. The UV light is a perfect solution for areas that cannot use the current “fogging” technology, such as our emergency rooms and operating rooms. In addition, this technology will be used in patient rooms when short turnaround times are required and also to decontaminate wheelchairs and other medical equipment. The UV light is positioned in different loca- tions of a room for five-minute intervals to kill the bacteria with timed exposure to ultraviolet light. This very effective method halts the spread of pathogens like MRSA, C. diff and staph. This is state-of-the-art technology we are grateful to have. High-tech training for OB staff The other technology the foundation funded is a set of advanced childbirth simulators. These high-tech mother/ baby simulators are designed to pro- vide training throughout a complete birth experience. This experience simulates before, during, and after delivery scenarios for our staff to train on. These simulators provide fetal heart sounds, perinatal monitoring, cervix dilation and resuscitation for the baby via intubation, and even allow staff to reposition the baby during delivery, monitor the baby’s descent and provide IV fluids. Our Environment Services and Obstetrics department employees are grateful to the foundation for providing these new tech- nologies to help make us a better and safer hospital.
